On that subject, have you ever read Vonnegut's "God Bless You Mr. Rosewater", where a rich guy who is a drunk and a soft touch decides to serve people, and ends up driving his wife to a shrink after her empathy erodes from the wear- and- tear, and has a nervous breakdown himself from too much bathos? Vonnegut's alter ego, Kilgore Trout, makes an appearance (there is an occasional thread contributor who uses the monicker), and Rosewater's father is portrayed as Barry Goldwater.
