I think you mispercieve the situation. It is like Daniel's misapprehension about Christians. Morally perfect people do not need salvation; reprobates do. According to the old formula, the conviction of sin is the first step in conversion. Similarly, it is not a question of smugly superior people sitting in judgment, but people who are aware of human fallibility and the fragility of standards, and who fear the chaos that would ensue were standards not finally upheld.
