Tellabs at #11 in Business Week's Top 50--in good company

Microsoft Tops 1999 Business Week 50 Best Performing Companies

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MARCH 18, 1999--Sure, size matters.
But what's the point of being bigger if you're not better? Measured by
eight dynamic performance criteria, Microsoft Corp. is No. 1 in the
1999 Business Week 50 rankings of the best performing companies in the
Standard & Poor's 500 index. Rounding out the Top 10: Dell Computer,
Gap, Oracle, EMC, Compuware, America Online, Morgan Stanley Dean
Witter, SBC Communications, and Schering-Plough. The exclusive
rankings appear in Business Week's Mar. 29 issue, released today.

Business Week looked for growth in a variety of categories,
unlike other rankings that judge companies by one measure alone, such
as size or return to shareholders. The result is an honor roll in
which the stars stand out. These top performers spurred revenue
without sacrificing earnings and got the most out of their equity, all
while racking up handsome shareholder rewards.

In its third year out, the list is proving to have good
predictive value: Consider last year's class, the 1998 Business Week
50. In the 52 weeks ended Mar. 12, 1999, the 50 companies picked a
year ago as best performers scored a total return of 32%, compared
with a gain of 21% for the broader S&P and 15% for the Dow Jones
industrial Average.

Since Business Week's ranking is growth-oriented, it's no
surprise that many of the Business Week 50 companies benefited from
operating within the economy's hottest sectors: computers,
pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, and finance. But it was hardly
necessary to have a ".com" in your name--or in your future--to make
the list. Ford Motor became the first auto maker to make the list, at
No. 26, and truck maker Navistar International rolled in at No. 29.
And who would have thought the dowdy old appliance industry could
produce a star? But Maytag did, averaging 44% average annual net
income over the past three years and earning the No. 38 spot.
