Daisy,

Not an IRC guru, but I think the problem might be that everytime a chat message is displayed, your system is giving you notice through a beep, or (in your case) another type of sound.

If you're using mIRC, go under File/Options. . .and highlight SOUNDS (on the left hand menu tree). On the right side of your screen you should see options that you can check and uncheck.

I think you may want to clear all check boxes. Keep in mind, the system will not beep you when new chat/channel/query messages are displayed, but I think that's what you're needing. Hope this helps.

Cheers!

If you in a channel in IRC and you have scrolled up to look back at a post, everytime someone posts to the channel, including yourself, it will beep at you, until you scroll all th way back down to the bottom. This may or may not be what you were doing. This is the default setting, MIRC is highly configurable though, so you can set it any way you want.

<<how to save to file folders>>

To save your favorite places and personal filing cabinet on AOL
you want to locate the file named 'organize' There you will see
your screen names. That is where your favorite places and personal filing cabinet info is stored. Copy those to a disk. When
you reinstall AOL , delete any screen names that come up auto
matically under organize and move those original ones back to
the organize file. I've never figured out how to save the info
in your stock portfolio so if you use that feature you might
need to jot those down on a piece of paper and re-enter.
