So that means in this case the lawyers (Senators) would be poking around into how the Health Canada scientists/doctors are doing their job? I pity them.

In the US, this same scenario played out, but ended quickly with a nasty letter from someone high up in the executive. In the US, we believe the people who know best how to do their job are the ones doing it, or their immediate managers. Also, we don't hide things, we bring them out (unlike Asia). This is how we end up with companies which the rest of the world finds hard to match in terms of competitiveness.

Tony: In Canada, are there requirements that those in government who are involved with scientific issues have any background whatsoever in science? I don't think this is the case in the US either, so we rely on the EPA and FDA. It's a joke to get politicians involved in issues they cannot comprehend. Recently politicians tried to get involved on this very same rbST issue in the US, but it didn't go far.

Scientific decisions must not be political ones...remember what the Royal Society said.
