<If you accept this fact, this rules out problems with toasters, microwaves, cars etc.>

Who cares about toasters, microwaves, VCR's, etc? I don't.

You're the same guy who gave the speech: "Chicken Little get hit with a Y2K", aren't you?

I got a copy of Chicken Little from the library, and talked about Chicken Little, Henny Penny, Ducky Lucky, and of course Foxy Loxy who took advantage of the fears to try to land them all on his dinner table. I then equated the "acorn" to the Y2K problem, and the foxy loxys to the Y2K doom-sayers/salesmen ....

Why don't you contact these guys and tell them this is all a myth and there's no point in going off the grid 10AM on Dec 31?

ONTARIO WATER AGENCY WILL SHUT DOWN AUTOMATED SYSTEMS 10:00AM DEC 31
=======================================================
Testimony By George Terry: Ontario Clean Water Agency ( December 8, 1998 )

Our plan is to make sure that every water tower and reservoir is full as of 10 a.m. on that Friday night. Every sewage lift station's pump well will have been pumped down to zero. So if we have an event that takes place, we'll be ready for it.

Now, our plants will go off the grid at 10 a.m. on December 31. They will be slowly phased out. We will go to manual operations on full generator backup. I really believe that Ontario Hydro is going to be in a place to actually provide power to all of our municipalities. We're just safeguarding our instrumentation in this regard.

Power plants running under 2000 dates

>>>Some Y2K commentators argue that the use of compliant and non-compliant computer systems in a network will corrupt all the date-related data on the network. Date forwarding has proved this is not a concern.<<<

>>>Springfield, Mo., ran its publicly-owned Southwest Power Station using 2000 dates for 10 days in fall 1998 without incident. Washington Water Power, a Spokane, Wash.-based utility owned by Avista Corp., has operated several of its facilities on 2000 calendars and the company has declared itself ready to deliver power reliably after the New Year. Northern States Power, a Minnesota utility, has also advanced dates into 2000 without incident, according to sources.

According to the North American Electric Reliability Council, 40 power plants have operated successfully using post-1999 dates.<<<

Jim, there is a class of chips that could possibly be "date sensitive" without a provision to input a date if the chip loses power. I am referring to EEPROMs (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory). However, I am not sure if anyone has ever burned a calendar routine into an EEPROM. Perhaps a more technologically advanced reader could comment?
