<<<Gigabuys is not well done...at least for now.>>>
An excellent post on the perils of internet sales. I believe that Dell would be interested in your opinions sent via E-mail.
As a long time Dell investor I count on the company , especially in this rather new venture, to keep very close tabs on the results and the wishes of customers. Dell recognizes the need for continual improvement in the matter you discussed.
In regard to the component prices, which can be higher than if bought at Best Buy, etc.
Memory:
Not long ago, before the last 3 Dell splits, I would have driven
the 30 miles to the nearest Best Buy to to purchase the 64 megs of memory I might desire and save perhaps $40. They would of course assure me that it would fit any computer- if I could find an
available clerk among the roughly 5000 sq ft of computer accessories
in the dept.(not easy) And I could return it via the 60 miles RT if it wasn't right.
Today I could contact Dell via the Web, enter the type of
computer ( Optiplex Gx1) and the serial number, and be assured that the part I wanted was correct and would shortly be delivered to my door. The same would apply to some speakers I hanker for.
Instead of being a hobby or a device I enjoyed taking apart
and inserting some improvements to have the fun of seeing how they worked out, my computers have changed into a important business tool for handling investments and record keeping.
I want them working every day ( as does very employee of Boeing, Ford, or Sara Lee etc.)
Despite having several desktops at home, I recently bought a Dell Latitude to take on trips if I ever get loose to take a vacation.
You have done very well to trust Dell in the past. For the first few weeks the Gigabuys site will be an experiment as it builds up top speed and will be adjusted as public feedback comes in. I have no problem in trusting Dell to make it a marvelously efficient site.
Regards
Sig

Dellfan, re: Gigabuys.com, I spoke to IR and passed on your post. Dell has been receiving this good feedback. Basically, they decide to go with the 80/20 principle and implement as soon as possible and then make the remaining improvements as they go. Gigabuys.com is a very high priority and they will be focusing attention on improving it to "leadership levels"

:o)
