BTW, how did the people in Panama act toward you? Actually, it depended on which ones we're talking about. There were the poor 'ol country folks living off the land who LOVED US. And of course the kids who were constantly hoping to get a package of gum or candy from our rations. Then there were the Drug Runners, and a few Colombians I suspected of being FARC members there to keep a watch on us, who seemed pretty happy to see us go. But neither of these groups showed much hostility. Doing so and creating an incident with our troops would have been bad for their local base of support. After all, we were there to rebuild their dilapidated schools and the kids always come first, even if it means putting your drug running operations on hold. As for the comments regarding the current administration, I'm certainly no fan of it and I personally have had the same concerns. But what people fill out on a force evaluation survey, and how they actually feel when ordered to illegally confiscate weapons from citizens, will be two different things altogether. Most folks in the military have tolerated the current administration, but would they be willing to undertake a full scale declaration of martial law without the circumstances justifying it?? I kinda doubt that. I opine it would require a major disruption, catastrophe, or nationwide terrorist event to create the sustainable support in the military for nationwide weapons confiscation. Why? Simply because the military doesn't trust this President (nor do his own advisors), and have little appreciation for how he has treated them over the past 6 years. Why should they suddenly act so completely to overthrow the constitution? The result will be a civil war. Now who something to gain from causing a civil war? It certainly wouldn't be the gov't types.
