Dave[1] I agree the GSM/CDMA battle was what they were talking about and I was sidetracked by the pricing issue - which is one of my hot buttons but flogging dead horses is popular and I haven't yet heard Tero say CDMA has won. He still suggests GSM handset functionality will carry the day, though less volubly. There are still some who think CDMA is stuck at the starting gate. It annoys me when 'marketers' try to pretend pricing isn't part of the marketing mix and focus on differentiation and other jargon in an attempt to obfuscate and distract attention from price - pissing customers off. When I buy a packet of tea, I don't want to enter a contest for a trip to Zimbabwe or a Mystery Weekend for Two though I'm sure they get great product differentiation. Maybe they have figured out their market segmentation and target demography precisely and KNOW that they will maximize their sales and profits like that. Usually, I believe the answer is they haven't and I've seen a lot of market research on which they base their silly ideas. On GSM overlays - sure, GSM is okay, and won't be replaced casually, but what about when they reach capacity and have to extend and upgrade. That will be decision time. More money into the hay, horseshoes and cartwheels or upgrade to a car? I think it will be sooner rather than later. This is FAST moving technology. Competitive pressure in Europe, China and NZ will see to it. I don't believe multimode handsets will predominate. There will be Globalstar/terrestrial multimodes and GSM/cdmaOne/WWeb/Globalstar multimodes, but analogue will fizzle fast so I can't see that being included. Then again, if OFDM or derivatives arrive, they might start life as multimode. Electronics are cheap and getting cheaper. Base stations are still civil engineering projects. I hope the rumour is true! Because it will mean Irwin and co are happy with their decision and Ericy has seen sense. It will mean 12 March was indeed my cusp day once again. Spooky!! I have confidence that Q! knows how to negotiate and realizes the value they have. This is going to involve a LOT of money in our balance sheet! Yummo! It is going to establish a huge flood of revenue which will not be restricted in its flow to the bottom line. It will be the final victory over the GSM Evil Empire. The GSM Nazis will have been vanquished - their re-education can begin. Sven-Christer Nilsson seems okay. Ericy slipped in recent years because of their naughty ways, but they have learned to behave and will now get back on the high road to happiness. They will transfer $$billions to Q! when they start producing CDMA systems. Mqurice
