Transoft Networks Coppola's ZB
Facilities

Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope recently opened ZB Facilities, Ltda., a
sister all-digital postproduction company in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Kim Aubry, VP of
Engineering and Technology at Zoetrope and lead ZB facility designer, and Aldo Mussi,
GM of ZB, placed Transoft's high-speed Fibre Channel network at the heart of its
system. Developed to offer Rio clients a one-stop-shop approach, ZB is outfitted with
eight Macs: four running Avid nonlinear editing systems, two running Digidesign Pro
Tools, and two graphics workstations. All eight computers share 500 gigabytes of
storage.

"Transoft's FibreNet system allows a unique level of creative collaboration between all
departments on a given project," explains Aubry. "We no longer need to make tape
copies of edited material for graphics designers or sound editors. Now we can telecine
transfer raw film images and sound directly into our Avids, allowing graphics, visual
effects, and sound post crew access to manipulate them, and return them to the cut
project."

ZB Facilities' first editorial project is a 52-episode TV documentary series entitled 500
Years of Brazilian History produced by ZB Co-founder Guilherme Fontes. "The Transoft
solution offered the type of data sharing that was required of this project," commented
Mussi. "All of the editors and artists need to access shots from the same footage
simultaneously for the documentary project. The Fibre Channel network not only offers
them a huge advantage, but it is also a great benefit to all of the clients coming here for
a soup-to-nuts postproduction solution."
