Snerd - IO -

IO has been killed along with the rest of the oil patch. They primarily manufacture 3-D seismic equipment, and they are one of the leaders. 3-D seismic was a major advance in exploration, the equipment allowed for a much higher percentage of successful wells. It was therefore cost effective even though it was much more expensive than 2-D. Of course as oil prices drop, exploration drops off and companies like IO suffer. When exploration picks up IO should rise again. Other plays in the market include MIND which has exclusive rights to lease IO equipment in North America as well as equipment produced by Sercel.

IO is also involved in the move to what is being called 4-D seismic. 4-D adds the element of time to the picture. While 3-D is primarily for exploration, 4-D is mostly used to manage reserves.
