Hey Tech. Tell me about Playsite.

Sent my 12-year-old there the other day for the first time, and he played chess with a bunch of people. (Alas, he lost; was probably playing Fleckenstein.) Had a ball, went back the next night as well. Had to kick him off so he could do his homework.

What's the growth strategy for Playsite, and how much money can it make? Didn't really look at it too closely; is it bringing in advertising revenue? Any e-commerce prospects? Where does it fit in the competitive landscape?

What was impressive was that Playsite was *busy.* Lots of users, and all kinds of "noise." Would like to see many more interactive and multi-user games added.

BAM

Nah, I speculate this way all the time... because I was once involved in evaluating business plans for a VC company. Yes it was a 30mm acquistion, btw. Anyway the current revenue streams such as they are are somewhat irrelevant to my conclusions - I see most of the rest of GNET as a "me too" product... which is not to say there isn't value there as the internet expands. But to me, SI as a communications forum is the most valuable component.

I should say though, that I live about a block away from inktomi and have discussed the future of seaching, search engines and the like in depth with some of the technical people - and left that discussion with the sense that the entire arena is poised for a huge overhaul, and is also not a sticky technology. Of course technical people always give that impression - so I hate to make a big deal out of it, but for the time being I avoid anything related to searching, metaseach or whatever, no matter to me. Gnet represents a tiny amount of my overall portfolio btw.
