Theoretically you could cut out Intel.

But, LSI and Sony started the project before LSI bought Symbios, so there was no compelling reason for them to change. Besides, in a $200 product, even a $1.50 component is a significant cost to be eliminated, if possible. Sony needs an expensive ($5-10?) processor, but they can hire a few programmers to produce an RTOS themselves. I think something like 40% of all RTOSes are produced in-house, which is a lot higher percentage than processors.

I'd expect H-P and/or Sun to use I2O in their workstations or servers before Sony used it in a mass market product.
