Thanks John, those are interesting links. I just got back from a little shopping tour (actually window shopping) at Circuit City and didn't see any of those fancy interupptible hard disk VCRs so I guess they're not yet a mass merchandise item. What I did see was an HDTV available for a mere 5K (base system only, extras guaranteed to boost that number hugely) and holy resolution, batman, we have lift off! The picture was so real it's hard to describe except to say that when a crocodile swam by the lady next to me jumped. This is really cool and a major, major advance but of course your net worth would take a hit and there's very little HDTV programming available, so it too is not ready for prime time. Will say that the crowds were doing a whole lot of "oohing and awing" though. Outrageous picture quality and sound. Good things coming down the road! Mike Doyle

Echostar also has this technology produced by their in-house box-maker. It is combined with Microsoft's WebTV(WebStar for this application) in the same box as well.
