U.K., Biotech Companies in Talks to Ban GM Crops Until 2002

London, March 14 (Bloomberg) -- The U.K. government and biotechnology firm are in talks to freeze the growing of genetically modified crops until at least 2002, the Independent on Sunday reports, without citing sources. The agreement, between the U.K. government and companies including Novartis AG, Zeneca Group Plc and Monsanto Co., follows a backlash of public opinion against GM foods and a call by the government's official advisor on wildlife for a freeze on the commercial growing of GM crops. The U.K. government is reluctant to impose a ban on GM foods and has opted for the voluntary moratorium, the paper says.

The U.S. on March 3 had proposed a pilot program to speed approval of gene-altered crops in Europe.
