Back in the old days of the net, before browsers were the big thing, we had this capability built into several newsreaders - it should not be too hard to do on SI either. The technique was to have an OT button which was separate from the reply button. There would then be a separate thread of the OT material which one could bring up if desired. We had an OT toggle which if enabled allowed all posts, if disabled only showed the "on-topic" ones. It was simple, easy to use and back in the days of 9600 bps modems kept tempers under control. BTW I have been having one or another variant of the OT vs fellowship argument for at least 14 years - I have posts on a compuserve forum from april of 1986 which are a lot like this discussion. Back then I was a lot quicker to just jump in and hack together a program to solve the problem. Maybe the SI team could be goaded into action.
