According to "Kibbles&Bites" #102, from Small Dog ( smalldog.com),
"...the rumor is that Mac OS X went golden master this last week..."

The newsletter also mentioned a feature of OS X that I did not know of;
one that network administrators will love!

Reprint from Kibbles&Bites, by Don Mayer:
____________

One other interesting feature of Mac OS X is NetBoot, which allows Macs
on the network to all run the same system software and applications
stored on the NetBoot server, so updating the server once automatically
updates all the systems on the network. At the same time NetBoot
protects the System Folder and applications from corruption and includes
management tools for setting system policies and controlling user access,
while users can securely access their own applications and files from any
Mac on the network.
______________

I checked the Apple Store to see if there might be a teaser up about OS X, and there was not. However, I was
impressed at how many software packages there were being offered by this "so called" hardware
manufacturer.

store2.apple.com.

In order of appearance:

Mac O.S. 8.5
AppleWorks 5 (Macintosh)
AppleWorks 5 (Windows)
Sorenson Video Compressor (Macintosh)
Sorenson Video Compressor (Windows)
AppleShare IP 6.1 Mac/Win)
Apple Network Assistant 3.5 (Mac)
ARA Client 3.0 (Mac)
ARA Personal Server 3.0 (Mac)
Apple Web Page Construction Kit (Mac)
HyperCard (Mac)
QuickTime 3 Software Developer's Tool Kit (Mac/Win)
QuickTime VR Authoring Studio (Mac)
Japanese Language Kit (Mac)
Chinese Language Kit (Mac)
WebObjects 4.0 (Mac)

Quite an impressive list!

The previously linked Bloomberg article stated that Mac OS X Server is expected to cost $995. Can anyone
verify this? Does it seem a little steep to anyone else but me?

Coming in Colors.

>Two people I know who aren't heavy users at all went with the Grape for $200 (more) pretty much based on color alone.<

Ditto. Two customers on Friday, both of whom said *cost* was a chief concern, indicated they would purchase Strawberry/Lime models, even though a Rev B. would be plenty adequate for each.

Conversely, an Australian art dealer who was spec-ing a $15,000 gallery set up, opted for a pair of Bondi Beach-colored Rev Bs, even though he could clearly afford the Cs.

BTW, I like the Rev B because we can install a Griffin iPort and save people's investments in serial laser printers and also allow them the option of running up to 21" monitors (6mb Rage Pro) in the future.

PS> Monster kudos to Eric for his guidance on revenues/earnings!

Now, I'm pretty much relegated to "color commentary". :)

Marc, did you say Costco carries the rev Bs? How long has this been going on?
