Teddy, I think that something to keep in the back of the mind is that Merrill was a full partner in the Teleport venture some eighteen years ago, when TCG was formerly known as ML Telecommunications. MLT connected some of the SIAC offices in Manhattan to the various Stock Exchanges they served, using multimode ribbon fiber at the time, if memory serves me correct.

The other partners in this seemingly unusual assemblage of players at the time, when it was formally launched as TC in the early Eighties, were: the City of New York; Western Union (RIP); and the Port Authority of NY and NJ.
