Ice,

Thanks for the link to the write up on Ameritrade. I'm not here to defend Ameritrade but the author is incorrect about Ameritrade's fees if their Internet trading site goes down.

When we asked what would happen if Ameritrade's servers were down when we wanted to place a trade, the agent said we could use the brokerage's touch-tone system or talk with a broker directly. Fair enough, but Ameritrade doesn't honor the online rate in that case.

I can personally attest that I have always been given the Internet rate when Ameritrade's server is down. Every now and then, the broker who takes my order forgets to manually enter the lower commission and I have to contact them to request a correction. Without fail, they have always lowered the commission in these cases. In defense of the author of the article, the person that he spoke to probably did indeed give him that information. I suspect that he would have gotten a different answer if he called back and spoke to somebody else.
