Ron--- One of the things that is ridiculous about the thesis of America as an empire is our dependency upon diplomacy and multi- lateral institutions, and the fact that it would be easy to counter our power if a number of countries formed a coalition against us. An empire doesn't have the political problems that we do, as when France denied us fly- over rights during a bombing raid on Libya, or when we had the delicate task of persuading members of NATO to accept the SS-20's. Hell, if we were the bullies that everyone says, we would not be sweating proliferation in India and Pakistan now. But there is a longstanding tradition of anti- americanism, stretching back to the 19th century. To the Left, we are the prime capitalist power, and therefore necessarily evil. To the Right, we are the most modern and "rootless" society, a nation of immigrants and industrialization, and therefore debased. This coalesced into a reflexive antipathy amongst certain sorts of intellectuals, exacerbated by the compromises of the Cold War.
Take care, Neocon
