Buffett has written often on the miracles of compound growth and the hesitancy to take needless profits on which taxes must be paid.

For him to order the Gen Re equity liquidation with the resultant tax liability, and then not buy something else, should leave reasonable persons with some questions.

OTOH, Buffett isn't always right. Just often enough to be considered the greatest investor of our time.<g>

Bill:

I don't know the answer to the "when" question, but when a guy like Buffett clears the decks and puts the mattresses against the doors, it sure makes me glad I'm on the short side of the scene. (g)

As we're all well aware, in some ways, a "stealth bear market" has been underway for some time anyway, (witness the junior and intermediate stocks) and the markets are quietly starting to take any of the "disappointers" out into the back alley. I suspect Greenspan's Fall rate reductions merely postponed the inevitable. Latin American clouds are already spreading over North America. Some small thing will trigger it.

Best, Earlie
