and here is my post on what was, the mystery switch:

Oliver Douglas and Mr. Burns re: mystery switch
by: hawaii60 27722 of 37126I did some digging today as promised regarding the switch that has been talked about previously by HJ.

The fact is that the switch is no pipe dream. Indeed it is manufactured and software developed by IDT's inhouse R&D department and is in place in beta testing on our network right now. My impression is that that process is nearing completion and we could have an announcement of this in the NEAR future However, due to the quiet period in place, I could not get a deployment date or other forward looking statements..

This switch was primarily developed for IDT's own inhouse proprietary use and that is the way it will be deployed so that our company received the full advantage of it first. The switch will cost less than 1/6 of what we normally pay Nortel (which is over a million per) and deploys in 1/2 the time and is faster and more cost beneficial. I was able to confirm that one reason our network buildout is not complete is because it was held up, to allow for deployment of this cheaper, faster alternative.

Again, because of forward looking type issues, we can expect no news as to the companies plans for distribution or sale or licensing of this technology until at least the cc, but it is my opinion that this will have industry wide implications.

Thats all for now.

Frank, thanks for that addition. Perhaps you can elaborate on Bill's question regarding traditional versus data switches.
