The data recovery stuff that I've heard about (never used any tho) is all pricey, as in $xx per cylinder or $xx per kbyte ..... but that was back a few years ago, and I don't know how the prices are now.

There was one tech in my wife's office who I witnessed solving a similar problem on one of the school's machines (ONLY after all else had failed and there was nothing to lose but the remote possibility of having it work) --- he used the old time tested method of
hitting the hard drive, after he'd taken it from the machine, with a hammer.... and then he slammed the hd on the table top a couple of times, too.
I questioned him and his reply was "what's there to lose, the next place for the hd is the trash" ---
btw, it did work long enough for the secretary to copy all the files to disk and save them to transfer to the new hd he installed.

On a more pleasant subject, my eldest daughter is bringing the grandkids (12 and 13) over for the week.
I suspect that the days of wanting to spend spring break with us are numbered, unfortunately.... teens have a different outlook that the preteens ...... ggggg

I think the best thing might be to take the box in to a qualified shop tomorrow and see what they say.
