Sometimes when you get a cold all the little cilia fall out in your lungs, and then when they grow back they tickle and tickle and tickle, and if you keep coughing, coughing, coughing,(Ah-hack-hack-hack-hack-hack!) you can throw your back out and break ribs and throw your neck out, too. It's miserable. You aren't coughing up "productively," it's just dry coughing. For "productive" coughing, you can take cough medicine with guaifenesin, which thins the mucus.
