Sony Corp. (SNE) and General Electric's (GE) NBC unit are said to be in talks for a global partnership. The deal is seen providing NBC with access to Sony's West Coast movie and television studios, while giving Sony broader distribution access. New York Post

Highlights:

- Executives from both companies met secretly in Tokyo last month to discuss such a partnership.

- NBC would have access to Sony's West Coast movie and television studios, while giving Sony broader distribution access.

- The recent meeting focused on the Internet and new media, especially in light of NBC's failed attempt to buy portal Lycos (LCOS). NBC had similar talks with Time Warner (TWX) and Viacom (VIA).

- Sources told the Post that the discussions aren't ongoing and no deal is imminent.

- Sony hopes to eventually launch an IPO of its U.S. entertainment assets, but first wants to add a major broadcast or cable network to its portfolio, the Post said.

- The talks were first reported in this week's New Yorker.
