It makes you wonder just how reliable are (a) surveys and (b) analysts soundings.

Not too... IDC and Dataquest do a little better job than most because they have been at it long enough to know the right questions to ask, and stick mostly to shipment rather than order data. But analysis of what's happening in the channel is a daunting task, even for those who do it every day. The analysts don't have a clue. Last summer they showed DELL taking over the top spot in desktops when in fact customers were buying CPQ over DELL 2:1. But half of the HW to fulfill those orders was already in the channel, so they were comparing DELL shipments to customers to CPQ shipments into the channel. The analyst's understanding of real market share (with a few notable exceptions) is a joke. How these guys maintain any credibility is beyond me. I guess in the kingdom of the blind...
