I am not sure why everyone keeps using the "Fall/98" peaks. If oil truly reverses the fall/98 peaks will not be the targets set by many. Why not go to the fall/97 peaks??

Just to play the devil'e advocate. When looking at how far various stocks are from their fall peaks, best not forget that earnings estimates have been greatly reduced since then and the sanctity of drilling contracts has come under a cloud.

Gary,

The only problem with your scenario is that since the last uptrend, earnings and projected earnings growth for these companies have been under extreme revision/adjustment with both significant upgrades and downgrades. I have attempted to look at current data
(which is what new investors will see) and make my selections accordingly. Your point is well made and only 'time' will tell which analysis or selection methodology will be the weightier.
