Bill, not sure exactly about the context of your question regarding switches, but yes, there are traditional voice switches and data networking switches. However, it is not as clear cut as that, because much voice traffic today is digitized anyway, so there are several types of digital switches, some hybrid and others purely digital. I am not sure how many traditional analog (voice) switches are manufactured/sold today. Traditional switches lack the speed and quality to handle digitized data. And switches/routers made for internet traffic or VoIP have to handle packet switching, which introduces an entirely new set of demands on protocols, bandwidth, data integrity, and other factors.

Not being a comm engineer, this is about as far as I dare to go in responding to your question. Perhaps Frank or one of the other engineers can comment further.
