George,

There is no more oft-repeated lament on the SI threads than, "If I had just held, and not tried to trade this stock, I would be ____ richer."

Warren Buffett knew this.

Although it's a tremendous thrill to time a trade well, and make some quick money, it's also essentially impossible to hit them all. Sooner or later the shorts are squeezed dry, and the traders wish they had just held and held, and added more when the opportunity arose.

CMGI represents a great way to get in on many of the future internet success stories. So when the market goes crazy over one deal (e.g., Lycos) during one week or one month or one year, what does it matter over the long term? The trite and tired analogy of the internet stock mania to the tulip bulbs is so ridiculous that it really doesn't warrant comment. Nobody needed tulip bulbs to live, but there will be nobody whose life is not completely changed by the internet. Five to ten years from now, there will be many who will have extensive bruises from self-kicking about missing the best investment opportunity to ever come along -- the same way we kick ourselves for dismissing MSFT in 1988 as "overvalued", AOL in 1993 as "too risky and going nowhere" and DELL in 1996 as "near the top of its potential". Best of luck to all longs. We will be celebrating in 2005.
