We should point out that there are two distinct methods here. Each method has its pros and cons.

Method 1: Press the Alt key followed by a three number combination from the numeric key pad, i.e. {Alt}-130 to get "é".

Pros: WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get). Fast and easy.
Cons: Not as inclusive as method 2.

Method 2: Type "&#" followed by a three number combination, i.e. &#038#174 to get ®

Pros: All sorts of neat characters to use.
Cons: Not WYSIWYG. A tad clumsy and hard to proofread.
