Boliden Spanish mine seen reopening soon

MADRID, March 16 (Reuters) - Spain's regional government of Andalusia says it expects to grant a permit later this week for Boliden to reopen its zinc mine, Spanish newspapers reported on Tuesday.

The regional government has the final say on the opening of the mine which has been closed since a waste reservoir burst last April spilling millions of tonnes of toxic sludge.

''The industry council of the Andalusian government estimates that in the course of the present week it will be in a condition to grant the authorisation for the reopening,'' El Pais and La Vanguardia newspapers quoted an official statement as saying.

Boliden has said it would reopen the mine within days or weeks of receiving the government's backing.

They said the government was awaiting one more report which would impose certain environmental conditions for the mine to
reopen using an old open cast pit to store waste.
