JAKARTA, Mar 15, 1999 (Asia Pulse via COMTEX) -- Gold sales in the country dropped 70% in the past 14 months, but exports rose 10%, jewellery producers said.

World Gold Council (WGC) promotion manager Marcia Moniaga said the country exported 20 tons of gold in 1998 or an increase of 10% from 1997.

Moniaga said the prolonged crisis changed the priorities of the consumers to essential requirements.

Based on WGC data, only 10 of 40 jewellery producers recorded in 1996 remain operational now.
