What am I missing? With all the talk of Linux on this thread you'd think it was the greatest thing to ever happen to SUN. I think it's one of the worst. Is the thread so blinded by MSFT bashing that anything non-MSFT is considered GREAT for SUN automatically. I see LInux as much more of a threat to SUN than MSFT. LInux has a long way to go as a consumer OS but is on fire in the server space. Who derives most of their moolah from server sales, big bad servers that are reliable? SUN! Linux makes cheaper PC hardware reliable and this can only work against SUN. DO you think SUN is any match for Intel when it comes to manufacturing cheaply? When merced comes out and Linux is readily accepted as an OS in many IS shops who will be hurt the most? Of course MSFT will be a little but MSFT offers its backoffice suite which is highly integrated to the OS which is of value to some shops. I see Linux as much more of a threat to SUN by supplying what the PC guys have needed and couldn't get from MSFT - a reliable high performance OS that runs on their cheap hardware.

Of course SUN will still be at the top end of the server market but if its bread and butter sales of servers slows it could be damaged to the point where it can't finance other things such as getting JINI off the ground.
