Re: "free" trading, the deep discount brokers don't make their money on the spread if they act as an agent and not a market maker or principal. Only the market makers or principals make money on the spread.

The money MMs make on the spread comes back to discount brokers in the form of payment for order flow.

Also, many deep discount brokers pay below-market rates on cash, which is another revenue source apart from commissions.

Some brokers are already commission-free for certain types of orders (large market orders).
