Not necessary. Look at Ascend about six months ago when they acquired Stratus Computer.

With all do respect, the fact that people are hanging around waiting for CSCO to swoop in at $70 is pretty naive. Neither CSCO nor any other vendor is going pay big money for a company with 35% gross margins. If anything these acquisitions strengthen CIEN's position respective to acquisition. They now have two distinct cutting edge product lines with great margins and defensible margins at that!

Instead of competing with LU on price and number of wavelengths, they now have some differentiating offerings that help to maintain margins going forward.

How could CIENA afford to do this? How could they not afford to do it!?

My own un-humble opinion.
