Hi, Jim. I own LU, no NT, but I thought the commercial was pretty good from an overall perspective; here's why:

The commercial is so unusual (or dumb a*s, if you prefer) that, whether one likes it or not, one watches it closely and wants to see what the product/company is. They don't tell you it's Nortel until the end but the watcher remembers who the company is and everyone who has seen it remembers the *strange* Nortel commercial. That's exactly what they want but it doesn't always succeed. You remembered Nortel. Their objective was not about their specific products, product benefits, etc. It was to get everyday people to recognize the name Nortel and associate it with something other than a boring, stiff, telecomm equipment manuf; associate Nortel with something, coooool; even a little *out there*.

Here's a test: Next time you're watching TV with someone and they say, "Cool commercial.", ask them three minutes later who the company was. Frequently, they won't remember but they do remember it was a cool commercial. Nortel succeeded here because many will be talking about the *whacko* Nortel commercial; even watching for it. The name of today's marketing game is *branding*.

Just my two cents; I'll take my marketing hat off, now.
