The Goldman Sachs Hardware Index advanced 1 percent, with strength coming from Apple Computer (AAPL), which gained 1 9/16 to 34 3/4.

Other personal computer makers were slightly higher: Compaq Computer (CPQ) rose 1/4 to 30 1/2; Dell (DELL) advanced 11/16 to 42 7/8; International Business Machines (IBM) gained 1/4 to 178 1/4.

Gateway (GTW) bobbed between losses and gains in morning trading after U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray said there was "minimal risk" that the computer company could miss its first-quarter profit estimate of 64 cents a share. The consensus estimate from First Call is for Gateway to profit 61 cents a share.

Analysts at the bank maintained their "strong buy" recommendation on the stock, however, and said they believed Gateway was prepping to beat consensus expectations in its second quarter. Shares rose 13/16 to 68 5/16.
