Went to the Orb site to do a little more research on the verify issue. It is hugely important for users to do the verify pass as Orb touts its "Headerless ID" technology and the fact that no format pass is required. Translation, they saved money in disk production by not needing to have the machines to format and certify the media. This is one of the big cost components for media production.

So, defects are not known when you insert the media and start writing. Apparently they feel if you are using the drive for something like cRock! might use it for, it doesn't matter if all of the data gets recorded reliably.
