Soup, some more Japan sales data. This may be old news to some.

I posted that iCandies had 1-5 spots in Jan in retail unit sales. I'm not sure that source was correct. There was a 2nd hand mention of it in an Australian article so it could be. But I have the following weekly results.

MacinSearch rpt on 2 Feb that BCN, a trade pub in Japan that tracks 200+ retailers in the 3 largest urban areas reported as follows:

11-17 Jan Apple #1 with 37% of total retail unit marketshare. This was a jump from previous weeks probably due to the end of 1% smart loan program. iMac prices were reduced 17 Jan for 1st time in Japan.

18-24 Jan Apple #1 with 29.6% of market. iCandy was released on 24th and with 1 day of sales all 5 iCandies placed in top 15 while Bondi still held 10% of the market.

25-31 Jan I'm assuming that iCandies had top 5 places. This may be the confusion with the overall month. On the other hand iCandy sales have been big enough that perhaps it was enough to give top 5 places for the month.

For perspective, Apple held 8.75% of the consumer market in 98 in Japan, #5. That translates to 231K units. I posted that was total Japan units previously but that was a mistake, total market including business was 407K units, 5.1% of the market, #6. This data from IDC.

If we make huge assumptions that iMac is propelling Apple to #1 or #2 in consumer market it would have Apple surpassing NEC, Fujitsu, IBM and Sony. That would translate to some 15-25% of consumer market. Japan market is expected to be up 10% and PC data for Jan indicate consumer market has been up strongly thusfar but let's use 10%. That yields total Apple consumer units in Japan ranging from 435-725K up between 204 and 494K units from 98. I don't have good qtr breakdowns for PC sales in Japan. I tend to lean toward lower numbers but still an 88% unit sales increase over 98. Rich
