IC Chipsets for Broadband Applications to Grow 30% Annually Through 2004, Says ABI OYSTER BAY, N.Y., March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The IC market for wireline broadband applications (ADSL, cable modems, HDSL, and VDSL) is expected to grow from $174.1 million in 1999 to $638.4 million in 2004. The greatest share of this market value in 1999 is attributed to cable modems with 43% market share while HDSL accounts for 24%, and ADSL and VDSL represent 24% and 2%, respectively. This information is available in a new report, ''Broadband Integrated Circuits: A Strategic Analysis of the World Market for Wireline Chipsets'' from Allied Business Intelligence. The greatest change in shares between 1999 and 2004 will be the increasing demand of ADSL, which is expected to lead the market in 2004 with a 30% share. In the same year, cable, HDSL, and VDSL are anticipated to hold for 28%, 26%, and 16% share, respectively.Digital components account for two-thirds of the broadband IC market value in 1999. G.Lite is expected to be the dominant variation of ADSL over the next three to four years. However, shipments of legitimate G.Lite chip solutions are anticipated to account for less than 20% of the total market for ADSL ICs in 1999. A rapid migration to chips that support G.Lite is anticipated but these are expected to ship in limited quantities throughout 1999. In addition, most of these are expected to support V.90 as well as G.Lite. Likewise, shipments of ICs for the latest variation of HDSL (HDSL2), are expected to account for a minority (less than 5% in 1999) of total HDSL IC shipments. Perhaps surprisingly, GaAs ICs represent 5% of the market for cable modem ICs. Used in the front end, devices made from GaAs are expected to see greater penetration in the cable modem sector. Greater use of IC tuners is also expected in this sector. Meanwhile, VDSL supporters continue to tackle standards and deployment issues (particularly distance).
