There is no single most important thing. (That's like asking what's the single most important piece of a dollar bill that's been ripped into quarters.)

Also, depends on what you're looking for -- growth stocks, value stocks, AIM candidates, higher or lower growth/risk, dividend yield.

My personal criteria usually start with:
a. Historical growth in EPS >= 15
b. Current P/E <= 1.1 times current market average P/E
c. Current ratio >1.2
d. Market cap >= 5 mil

Perhaps we should start a discussion of stock screening criteria.

Picked this out of an article I was reading this am.
If you are looking for a stock to Outperform. Must have the following.

1. Larger market capitalization.
2. High return on equity.
3. High return on assets.
4. A low debt level.
