Thursday April 8, 8:15 am Eastern Time Goody's sees lower Q1 results KNOXVILLE, Tenn., April 8 (Reuters) - Goody's Family Clothing Inc., reporting slightly improved same-store sales for March, said Thursday it expects first quarter results to fall well below year-ago levels. According to the research firm First Call Corp., analysts expect the company to earn $0.24 a share in the first quarter ending in May, compared with $0.23 in the year-earlier period. The company posted net income of $7.8 million and revenues of $226.7 million in the year-ago first quarter. ''Sales for the month were well below plan...,'' said Robert Goodfriend, chairman and chief executive officer, in a statement. ''Also, as a result of promotional activity during March to maintain planned inventory levels, margins were lower than plan and last year.'' Goody's said comparable-store sales for March increased 2.7 over the same period last year. Comparable-store sales for the first two months of the first quarter increased 1.8 percent. The company posted $111.8 million in sales for the month of March, an increase of 14.4 percent over March 1998. Sales for the two months increased 14.6 percent, to $173.9 million from $151.8 million during the same period last year. Goodfriend said the company plans to open 30 to 35 stores, relocate about 18 stores and remodel about 6 stores during fiscal 1999. Shares of Goody's closed at 11-31/32 on the Nasdaq on Wednesday, well below their 12-month high of 29 but above their 12-month low of 7-5/8.
