Technology shares rising: Northern Telecom Ltd. (NT), Hewlett-Packard Co. (HWP), Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and Intel Corp. (INTC) will demonstrate new products at a press conference today in San Jose, California. The products will combine voice and data communications on office networks, and will be designed for small and medium-size companies. While Northern Telecom, the No. 2 seller of phone equipment in North America, said the products also will offer Internet features, it declined to provide details before the event. The other companies declined to comment. Northern Telecom rose 1 1/16, or 1.8 percent, to 59 7/8 and traded as high as 60 1/8. Hewlett-Packard rose 2, or 2.9 percent, to 71. Microsoft rose 2 11/16, or 1.7 percent, to 162 7/8.
