It could be that CIEN customers demand more diverse product lines from them that they have to make this deals to keep their core customers as well as to attract new customers as a stop shop.

Also, the acquisition does sufficiently muddy the waters in affixing a valuation to Ciena. A TLAB deal for 0.8 shares 6 months ago that was considered to high, does not necessarily remain to high after the acquisitions and other water that has since passed under the bridge.

Don't get me wrong -- I am not implying that TLAB or anyone else is going to acquire Ciena. I'm just saying that the Ciena at the time of the proposed TLAB merge was drastically different from the Ciena after these mergers, whatever the consequences.

Also, I do think it's no mere coincidence that Ciena shot up last week, the last few trading days before this deal was announced, wherein Ciena's shares are to be used as currency for the acquisitions. Hmmm.
