I personally believe there are other reasons behind this Y2K hype.

Jeff:

It is so hard to find and keep the middle ground. It is not credible to say that every mainframe will fail. Neither is it credible for John Koskinen to state that 'the national infrastructure will hold'. The rush to predict an outcome is keeping us all from focusing on the essential issue - no one is going to know what will happen until we go through this.

It is an unarguable fact that there is no way to pre test any piece of the 'national infrastructure' perfectly before 01/01/00, let alone the networked effects.

Koskinen and Clinton ("I can guarantee that everyone will get their social security check") are really starting to annoy me. If they are truly concerned about public panic, I would suggest that they prepare people for uncertainty. Authority figures who state that they can assure the public that any one thing will be okay - let alone 'the national infrastructure' - are giving people false assurances.

How about Koskinen saying 'we are very encouraged by the combination of Y2K work and contingency planning. At this time, we believe that any problems with the national infrastructure are likely to be contained within a short time. We do not anticipate nationwide disruptions.'

That I might believe. As it is, Koskinen loses more credibility by the day.
