Intel Inside, IRS replaces Y2K problem servers with new Intel based servers...

BEAVERTON, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 15, 1999--

Sequent's NUMAcenter Identified as Offering Highest Levels of
Performance and Availability in a Mixed-Mode Environment

Sequent Computer Systems, Inc., the leader in Intel-based
solutions for the data center, and the U.S. Internal Revenue Service
(IRS) today announced that the IRS has replaced more than 40 non-Year
2000 compliant mini-computers with 11 Sequent NUMACenter(TM) servers.
Sequent's NUMACenter environment was selected by the IRS to address
existing Y2K issues, reduce system management costs and provide the
agency with a hardware platform that will scale effectively into the
next century.
After extensive analysis, an internal IRS study determined
Sequent was the only system vendor that could meet all the agency's
requirements. These requirements included large application support of
both Microsoft Windows NT native operating system and reliable, highly
scalable UNIX database application support in a single platform.
Sequent competitors for the nearly $10 million contract to replace
non-Y2K compliant minicomputer and midrange computers were Sun
Microsystems and Pyramid.
"The Sequent upgrade addresses both Y2K compliance and cost
reduction with lower system maintenance and administration expenses
for those applications," said Paxton Baker, Chief of Distributive
Systems Software for the IRS. "The cost savings come as a result of
consolidation and efficiencies provided in Sequent's NUMACenter
framework optimized for the mixed mode environment."
The NUMACenter systems are being installed at production sites in
each of 10 IRS Service Centers across the United States, and at a
disaster recovery and test & development system in the agency's
Martinsburg Computing Center.
Another important aspect of the deal was Sequent professional
services included as part of the contract. The Sequent Professional
Services division will support the IRS efforts to fast track the
application migration and system installation process.
As part of the contract Sequent will also re-sell Spectra Logic
Alexandria software and StorageTek DLT tape libraries for system
back-up requirements.
