3Com Provides Cable Operators New Dual-channel Receiver Card
for Cable Modem Termination System

High-Density Upstream Receiver Card Delivers Dual-channel Downstream
and Upstream Architecture; Allows Cable Operators to Deploy Scalable
Internet Solutions

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 17, 1999--
Continuing to supply the cable Internet industry with innovative
solutions, 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS) today announced the
Cable TC Single-Slot Dual-Channel Upstream Receiver Card
(URC) for its 3Com Total Control(R) cable modem termination
system (CMTS). This highly integrated Data Over Cable Service
Interface Specification (DOCSIS)-based card provides cable
operators with two upstream channels per single card slot with a
distinct price advantage allowing them to expand capacity as needed.

The 3Com(R) dual-channel URC provides data-over-cable operators
with the ability to upgrade their two-way cable return chassis to
twice the upstream capacity for the same price as current upstream
receiver products. The dual-channel URC is fully "hot swappable"
allowing cable operators to easily expand their cable Internet service
to meet user bandwidth demands by adding more cards to the 3Com
CMTS in nearly any upstream/downstream ratio. With continued
support for the CableLabs certification process, 3Com's
dual-channel URC will be software-upgradable to the new cable
industry standard and features.

"This latest card set from 3Com offers twice the capacity in a single
slot and is based on DOCSIS 1.1 specification hardware," said
Mike Pula, product line director for 3Com's Cable Access group.
"The dual-channel URC doubles the existing slot capacity for the
3Com platform, enabling more room for growth as subscribers
increase. Any upgrades that may be required as the 1.1 standard
evolves can be easily accommodated through a software download."

Twice the Capacity in One Slot

The high-density design of the dual-channel URC supports up to
two channels per slot or a total of 30 upstream channels in one Total
Control chassis slot. This architecture offers cable operators the
capability to easily expand the CMTS in support of broadband
services. "Moving forward, these upgradable features are necessary
to deploy high-quality IP telephony and other real-time services
such as videoconferencing for cable Internet subscribers," continued
Pula.

Similar products demand a fixed ratio for downstream to upstream
channels, such as only one channel per slot. The 3Com solution
allows various combinations of downstream and upstream channels
in a single card slot. The 3Com remote access platform also
preserves head-end investments by accommodating multiple
"hot-swappable" cable access cards like the dual-channel URC. The
3Com CMTS can easily expand to meet increased user demand or
new services by adding more cards with little or no downtime,
saving on overall costs and ensuring customer satisfaction.

End-to-End Solution

The 3Com dual-channel URC works in conjunction with other
3Com CMTS products such as the Cable Access Router
Downstream Card set and Cable Access Management software.
These products, which run on the popular carrier-class Total
Control chassis, deliver a complete head-end cable solution.

3Com began commercial shipments of the first Cable Modem
Termination System last Fall. This high-speed, cable-return Internet
access system includes 3Com's CMTS and network management
software for the head-end and the U.S. Robotics(R) cable modem
CMX for consumers.
