Wilshire runs from downtown (at the east end) to Santa Monica on the west end through al sorts of districts...Downtown, Koreatown, the "Wilshire district" (where the LA County Art Museum is located), Beverly Hills, Westwood, Brentwood (where the Getty is located), and finally Santa Monica. The farther west, with the exception of Beverly Hills of course, the nicer it gets.

If you want some nightlife, try West Hollywood which is north of the museum and east/adjacent to Beverly Hills. It has the House of Blues, the Sunset Strip, etc. There are some fine smaller hotels adjacent to Sunset. This is also LA's mixed/gay district, but that has never been an issue with me. There is alot of vitality there.

Orange County is way south, between LA and San Diego.
