I think 16 is a magic number because it means 4 planes of sats are on orbit. With 4 planes, sat to sat handoffs between planes can occur, and thus testing can occur too. The plane to plane sat handoff is the new feature. There must be enough sats now up to make that feasible.

I agree with you Maurice. It's beta time! Hand out those phones and let's give them a thrashing. You can use Dubbo, I'll use Texas. We'll see if those innards are up to snuff.

*Oops careless again...* It should read: "While there were only 12 satellites in orbit [not 'in view'] there was only sporadic contact with a handset...so soft handoff couldn't be well tested etc..."

I should spend a bit more time editing before posting.

VMan, I'd love to test Globalstar handsets using the Dubbo gateway, but if you check a globe, you'll see New Zealand is further from Australia than most people realize [if they have any idea where NZ is]. A satellite midway over the Tasman Sea might give me a minute contact, but that would be about all. I'm hopeful a gateway is built in Auckland sooner rather than later. There are lots of yachts and open spaces with many USA visitors who would like to use their Globalstar phone here, so I think [differently from Oliver] that there would be enough demand to justify the cost.

Thanks John for the sympathy vote and 'kids' seem to do what they like when they are big and ugly enough SurferM. But you knew that didn't you.
