One other thing: To avoid the flood of me-too imitators at the low end they expanded their product offering to include high-end autos. Thus they segmented their offering to appeal to many different level of buyer.

They were able to manufacture autos at a profit so they prospered. Why do you ask?

I bought a Honda Civic CVCC in 1978 for $4000- about 25% less than I would have paid for an American sub-compact.

Honda bought their way into the American market, then jacked their prices up.
